There are some general rules that apply to interior plant design, you should follow these with some degree of flexibility.

  1. If you put plants on a table they should not be more than 3′ tall or 3′ wide.
  2. Floor plants should not be more than 2/3 of the ceiling height. There are some exceptions to this rule. For instance, a plant such as a palm has arching fronds, since the tips of the fronds end in a downward direction they can be allowed to stretch to the ceiling.
  3. Set small plants on small tables, larger plants on larger tables. If the table or shelf is more horizontal than vertical use a plant that stretches wide not tall.
  4. Hanging plants are generally a thing of the past but if you use them, the pots should be hung so that they are below the eye level.
  5. Plants set on the floor should generally come up to eye level unless you are showing off the blooms. This principle is violated fairly regularly, maybe better to think of a plant three feet or taller as a floor plant.
